Look, I know playing the lotto is a waste of time. I have friends who have busted my balls over the occasional, frivious $5 dollar scratch-off ticket for years. But the reason I occasionally indudgle a lotto ticket is because of stories like this: (1. The idea of luck is seductive and (2. I love the couple-minute fantasy during the walk home from 7/11 when you think about all the things you’ll spend your winning money on. Treating the parents to vacations in Hawaii. A down payment on a house. Starting a business. A car. Whatever.
Like the rest of us, this North Carolina woman knew that winning the lotto is a fool’s pipe-dream. So when her husband asked for Powerball tickets, she grabbed a scratch-off to make a point.

Glenda Blackwell’s husband, Buddy, asked her to buy two Powerball tickets over the weekend.
She said she wanted to make a point that the tickets were a waste of money, so Blackwell, instead, bought a $10 scratch-off ticket for herself.
“I was going to be ugly and buy a scratch-off to show him they didn’t hit,” Blackwell told WLOS.
It turns out the ticket was worth $1 million.
Blackwell opted for the lump sum of more than $415,000, after taxes.
She said she plans to buy a home with the money and set up college funds for her two granddaughters.
“I had to eat my words, but they were worth eating,” Blackwell said.
