You may not know this but, there is third and fourth party running for the White House in the 2016 presidential election. While Jill Stein seems to be a near impossibility especially in a new CNN/ORC Poll where the Green Party presidential candidate is only getting 2% of support. Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson stands at 7%, but a new Washington Post poll says he is currently receiving at least 15% support in 15 states, double digits in 42 states, and peaks at 25% in New Mexico, where he served two terms as governor.
In order to have even a sliver of hope in the presidential election, Johnson will need to to get a chance to participate in the upcoming presidential debates. However, the Commission on Presidential Debates has a set bar of 15% of support in recent polls in order to be invited to the debates. This 15% requirement has been said to be too high by Bernie Sanders.
“Probably too high,” the former Democratic presidential nominee said of the 15% threshold on an appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press. “Probably should be lower than that.”
In the past, Donald Trump also said the 15% was too high.
This week Johnson received an endorsement from the Richmond-Times Dispatch, but he will need much more support than that. To bolster his reputation, Johnson and Bill Weld, his running mate and former Massachusetts Governor, did a Reddit AMA.
The Libertarian candidates opened their Ask Me Anything with the following:
