Here’s the first full trailer for Spaceman, a biopic about outlandish, pot-friendly Major League pitcher Bill “Spaceman” Lee starring Fergie’s guy, Tad Hamilton aka Josh Duhamel…
Here’s the video description from FilmBuff:
“From the guys who brought you Bull Durham, White Men Can’t Jump, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas comes SPACEMAN: the mostly-true story of former all-star MLB pitcher Bill ‘Spaceman’ Lee. In the twilight of a long career as one of baseball’s all-time great eccentrics, Lee (Josh Duhamel) is cut from the Montreal Expos in 1982. Though Lee finds himself blackballed by the rest of the league for his outspoken politics (his views being “somewhere to left of Che Guevara”) and notoriously enthusiastic drug use, he refuses to quit the game. As of 2016, he still hasn’t.”
Uproxx posted the teaser trailer back in early June, calling Bill Lee “baseball’s biggest stoner” and giving the first promo a mixed reaction, mostly for the not-so-modern take on marijuana.
You might remember Lee from our rundown of the Most Notorious Drug Users In Sports History. If the nickname sounds familiar, you’re probably thinking of Dr. Spaceman from 30 Rock.

If you’re not Ken Burns, here’s a quick brief on Bill. He pitched for the Boston Red Sox from 1968 – 1979 (where he still holds the record for most games pitched by a southpaw), was traded to the Montreal Expos (where he won National League Left-Handed Pitcher of the Year over Steve Carlton), but was released after staging a one-game walkout over a teammate’s release. He also threatened to bite an umpire’s ear off in a World Series game, stating “I would’ve Van Gogh’d him!” Dude was Mike Tyson before Mike Tyson.
Lee went on to play for a bunch of semi-pro teams and even signed with an independent league at the age of 63. In 1987, Spaceman announced he would be running for Presidents of the United States under the Rhinoceros Party and wants to be governor of Vermont. At this point, why not, he’s got my vote. How much damage can a Rastafarian do? Although, he does defend Maoist China, sooooo… yeah.
