Back in September, Pornhub announced that its charitable division, Pornhub Cares, was launching a $25,000 scholarship. The porn website asked entrants to submit a 1,000 to 1,500 word essay answering this easy question: “How do you strive to make others happy?” or a 2 to 5 minute video outlining the following vanilla scholarship questions:
What is it that you do to make others happy
We’re looking for standout, compelling examples of students who pay it forward.Leadership abilities
Are you on student council? Do you mentor? Or do people just naturally gravitate towards you because you’re awesome? Tell us about it.Creativity in approach
Originality always scores bonus points.
The website received over a 1,000 entries for the $25,000 scholarship. But the one that stood out the most was from a 48-year-old Texas mom who was once the target of a terrifying murder-for-hire plot from her former employer.
MaryAnn Uribe of San Antonio, Texas was awarded the prize after explaining the traumatizing event while working at an administrator at a San Antonio law firm, where she reported her bosses for felony barratry:
Desperate to silence Uribe as a witness and stung by betrayal, one of the lawyers then allegedly hatched a plot to have Uribe killed. The murder-for-hire scheme unraveled after the would-be hitman went to the Texas Rangers. Wearing a wire, the informant caught the lawyer on tape saying that he “wanted something to happen to Uribe,” according to an affidavit, and agreed to pay for it. The lawyer resigned from the state bar and is scheduled to go on trial in Bexar County, Tex., in April 2016 on charges of solicitation of capital murder and barratry. His law partner will go on trial for barratry charges in April 2016.
This led to significant emotional distress, causing her to speak with a stutter and suffer from agoraphobia. Via:
“Every little thing sets me off — strange voices or the dog barking or the postman knocking,” Uribe said. “It can send me to the floor.”
Nonetheless, Uribe said, she wants justice served against her former employers.
“I’m very outspoken even though now my speech is impaired,” Uribe said. “I fight for those who can’t.”
According to the Washington Post, Uribe recently completed a two-year community college program. She will now complete her bachelor degree at Alabama’s Troy University with the scholarship money.
Pornhub, meanwhile, is thrilled award her the scholarship money, especially after the site was slammed by feminists when the scholarship was announced. Here’s what Corey Price, a VP at the site, told WaPo:
“We were looking for someone who spread happiness and effected positive change,” Price said. “She’s been through a lot. … When negative things happened, she really stood up for herself.”
Bravo, Pornhub, for making this woman’s life better.
