The following logic puzzle is supposedly from an old children’s magazine, according to The Independent, and while it may have been made for children that doesn’t mean it’s any easier for adults to solve.

Take a good look at the above photo, then try to answer these questions:

  1. How many tourists are staying at this camp?
  2. When did they arrive: today or a few days ago?
  3. How did they get there?
  4. How far away is the closest town?
  5. Where does the wind blow from: north or south?
  6. What time of day is it?
  7. Where did Alex go?
  8. Who was on duty yesterday?
  9. What day is today?

Scroll down for the answers!

1. There are four tourists. You can see four spoons on the picnic blanket as well as four names on the duty list.

2. They arrived a few days ago, otherwise the spider web on the tent wouldn’t be there.

3. They got there by boat since there’s oars on the tree.

4. No, a village isn’t far since there’s a chicken wandering around (tourists don’t bring chickens with them on vacation).

5. The wind is blowing from the south. The flag on top of the tend shows which way the wind is blowing, and you’re supposed to deduce which direction is south by the length of the branches on the trees (branches on the southern side of trees are normally longer). This answer is complete and utter bullshit, so if you got it wrong don’t feel bad J

6. You can tell that it’s morning, but only if you were able to solve the previous question – if you know where north and south are, you can now figure out east and west and determine the time of day based on the shadows.

7. Alex is catching butterflies. You can see his net behind the tent.

8. Colin was on duty yesterday, since Alex is catching butterflies and James is taking pictures (his camera tripod sticks out of his bag). That means Peter was on duty today, and by process of elimination Colin was yesterday.

9. Today is August 8th. Peter is on duty according to the list, and there’s a watermelon on the ground (watermelons ripen in August). Again, this is bullshit because who pays attention to the growth cycle of watermelons?
