As part of a final project for a sound design class, YouTuber ‘chloererb’ removed all of the music from Miley Cyrus’ ‘Wrecking Ball’ music video and subbed in her own sound effects. The finished product is a video of Miley Cyrus riding around naked on a wrecking ball with lots of grunting and moaning and all other types of sound effects of that nature.
The beauty of this video is that even if you hate Miley Cyrus’ music you can still enjoy this video, because it’s artfully shot, and there’s an overload of tasteful nudity:
A few years ago there was a trend of removing all the music from popular music videos and subbing in new effects, that was a pretty fun time on YouTube. This almost seems like a throwback to that, but it’s slightly different in a way that’s a little hard to explain.
During that YouTube trend where people were removing the music and adding sound effects to music videos they were trying to mirror whatever it was that was happening in the music video at that particular time. However, in this Miley Cyrus ‘Wrecking Ball’ video it seems like the person adding the sound effects took a little liberty in the types of effects they used, often substituting grunting for screeching, or moaning in place of Miley’s redneck yodeling.
Examples of the previous trend included:
(If you search ‘music video without music’ you’ll find a LOT more on YouTube)
As you can see, there isn’t any nudity in those videos and therefore the one above of Miley Cyrus’ ‘Wrecking Ball’ is significantly better. The removal of music from a music video is always going to be better when there’s nudity involved.
In fact, I think this ‘Wrecking Ball’ video without music was the most brilliant thing I’ve seen Hannah Montana do in years, and I’d love to see the ‘music video without music’ meme revived by removing the tunes from each and every one of her music videos. Unfortunately I’ve got zero talent when it comes to sound mixing, so I’ll need one of you bros to get on that for me.
