This summer, “South Park” co-creator Trey Parker revealed that in the show’s 21st season they would try to steer clear of President Trump and politics because the topic has “gotten boring” and he as well as Matt Stone didn’t want to paint the show as a political show.
“Yeah, and it’s also just gotten boring. We weren’t ever really that show. We would do an entire season and there would be one moment that played off something that had just happened and people would go, “ ‘South Park’ is the show that does that.” And that’s just not true. We’re not. We did start to become that, though, especially the last season. We fell into the same trap that ‘Saturday Night Live’ fell into, where it was like, ‘Dude, we’re just becoming CNN now. We’re becoming: ‘Tune in to see what we’re going to say about Trump.’’ Matt and I hated it but we got stuck in it somehow. We probably could put up billboards — ‘Look what we’re going to do to Trump next week!’ — and get crazy ratings. But I just don’t care.”
Parker said this season would be more focused on the storylines about the kids of South Park. However, the first clip from the Season 21 premiere gets a bit political. The episode is titled “White People Renovating Houses” and will touch on the subject of white nationalism, white supremacists, and the KKK, specifically from the rallies and violence at Charlottesville, Virginia last month. The official synopsis of the episode is as follows:
Protests break out on the streets of South Park. Protestors armed with tiki torches and Confederate flags take to the streets of South Park. Randy comes to grips with what it means to be white in today’s society.
“South Park” makes its triumphant return this Wednesday, September 13th at 10:00 p.m. on Comedy Central.
