The 2017/2018 NFL Regular Season kicked off last night in Foxborough with the Patriots losing at home 42-27 to Kansas City after the Chiefs put up 21 unanswered points in the 4th quarter. Tom Brady looked impotent last night, throwing for 267 yards without a single passing touchdown. It was only the 3rd time in Tom Brady’s career that he has started the season with a loss. I think I speak for everyone here when I say this is exactly how we all expected the NFL season to start this year…
Last night’s game started off like every other NFL game, with the Offense/Defense starters being introduced in a quick montage where each player says his name and the college where he played football. Watch enough NFL and you’re going to hear a lot of the same schools named over and over.
Brett McMurphy used to be my favorite football writer/analyst at ESPN before they had massive layoffs earlier this year and let him go, but that hasn’t stopped Brett from staying active in football. Over on his Facebook page, Brett put together a list of the Top 10 Colleges who have the most former players/alumni on a current NFL roster. The top 10 is LOADED with SEC and ACC teams, with 5 schools from the SEC and 3 from the ACC. He also broke down each conference, team by team, showing how many players in the NFL each school has.
Here’s a look at the Top 10:
1. LSU 50
2. Florida 45
(tie) USC 45
4. Alabama 44
(tie) Miami 44
6. Ohio State 42
7. Florida State 40
8. Clemson 38
9. Georgia 38
10. Michigan 35
SEC:
LSU 50; Florida 45; Alabama 44; Georgia 38; Auburn 34; Tennessee and Texas A&M 29; Arkansas 27; South Carolina 25; Ole Miss 23; Missouri 22; Mississippi State 17; Kentucky and Vanderbilt 11.
Based on NFL talent SEC’s biggest overachiever: Mississippi State; biggest underachiever: Georgia.
Big Ten:
Ohio State 42; Michigan 35; Wisconsin 32; Penn State 30; Michigan State 29; Nebraska 27; Iowa 26; Illinois 17; Rutgers 16; Maryland, Northwestern and Purdue 12; Minnesota 10; Indiana 9.
Based on NFL talent Big Ten’s biggest overachiever last 5 years: Northwestern; biggest underachiever: Michigan.
These numbers are based on current players on an NFL roster. That includes players on the Injury Reserve, practice squads, and exempt list, not just the starters. It’s also worth noting that the Ponies from Southern Methodist Universit (SMU) have as many players in the NFL currently as half of the schools from the Big 12.
